Consider having your clutch inspected if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Slipping clutch
Slipping occurs when there is not sufficient friction to hold everything tight. Driving with a worn friction plate means there is less material to grab the flywheel and pressure plate. This problem is often noticed when the engine revs higher than normal when the clutch is engaged. Or, you might feel the clutch disengaging quicker than usual, and the acceleration will be slower. Another sign of a slipping clutch is a burning smell. This is a very common wear issue.
Sticky clutch
A truck clutch that is having difficulty disengaging after the pedal has been pressed is a serious problem. Call Columbus Fleet Maintenance to get the right repair made quickly.
Hard clutch
The clutch pedal should not be loose or easy to push down on, but it also shouldn’t be difficult to engage and disengage. If your clutch pedal feels stiff or is failing to disengage, this is called a hard clutch. It is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Call us today for an inspection.
Insufficient clutch pedal give
A hard clutch can also contribute to insufficient clutch pedal give. The clutch should at least have a two-inch “give” before it engages. Any more or less give indicates that your commercial truck clutch is in need of immediate repair.
Unusual transmission noise
Although commercial trucks are loud vehicles, there are normal noises, and then there are noises that signal a problem. Truck drivers should be able to distinguish between the sounds of a properly functioning transmission and sounds that are not right. Grinding and screeching while shifting could mean a bad clutch mechanism. Have your rig inspected.
If your commercial truck is your livelihood, then regular truck maintenance is important to avoid expensive fixes or too much downtime with work.
